Situated in the southest outskirts of Barcelona City, El Prat Vermell aims to comprise Terra-Cycle’s Recycling concept as design generator to create a fresh makers neighborhood on the former ruins of the industrial quarter, El Prat Vermell.
The proposal intends to bring Barcelona’s urban fabric soul, while preserving an industrial character, framing the future within the traces of the past.
Trying to re-use the existing industrial buildings, the design strategy applied to the project’s site consists on the reconditioning of the existing structures; in addition, newer functions are proposed.
The industrial warehouses mark the rhythm for the new buildings; therefore, as an equalizer, these structures are carefully cut to create a playful motion in the inner courtyard within the continuity of the long void.
By breaking the industrial macro-scale buildings with narrow passages, bridges or spontaneous patios, and densifying with new housing blocks complemented with amenities and commercial spaces, the inner backyards would automatically achieve the desired livable relation between scale & density, very characteristic of Barcelona’s tissue.
Paving, benches and vegetation respond similarly to the stablished rhythm, while local trees, grasses and bushes crown the semi-public speciality to bring life, color and shadow.
